Micro-14 (140-1175) Power Sources Faxback Doc. # 7778

You can power the recorder from any of the following sources:

    Non-rechargeable batteries
    Rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries
    DC (vehicle battery) power
    AC power

INSTALLING BATTERIES

The recorder uses two AA batteries.

If you want to use non-rechargeable batteries, we recommend alkaline
batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552.

Or, you can use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries, such as Cat. No.
23-125. You must charge nickel-cadmium batteries before you can use them
to power the recorder. First, install the batteries as described in this
section. Then, see "Charging Nickel-Cadmium Batteries."

Follow these steps to install batteries.

1. Remove the battery compartment cover by sliding it in the direction of
    the arrow.

2. Insert the batteries in the battery compartment, as indicated by the
    polarity markings (+ and -).

3. Replace the battery compartment cover.

CHARGING NICKEL-CADMIUM BATTERIES

WARNING: Do not try to charge alkaline or other non-rechargeable
batteries. They might overheat and rupture or explode.

With an optional AC or DC adapter, you can charge nickel-cadmium
batteries. First, install the batteries in the recorder. See "Installing
Batteries."

CAUTIONS: Connect an adapter to the recorder only when the adapter is
connected to AC or DC power. Otherwise, the adapter drains
           power form the batteries.

Occasionally, fully discharge nickel-cadmium batteries before
recharging them. Otherwise, the length of time they hold a
           charge begins to shorten.

The recommended adapters supply 3 volts with the center tip set
to positive, deliver the 145 milliamps the recorder draws, and
have plugs that correctly fit the recorder's DC 3V jack. Using
an adapter that does not meet these specifications could
seriously damage the recorder or the adapter.

Charging Nickel-Cadmium Batteries Using AC Power

Use an AC adapter, such as Cat. No. 273-1435A, to charge nickel-cadmium
batteries with AC power.

1. Insert the adapter's sub-mini plug into the recorder's DC 3V jack.

2. Insert the adapter's other plug into a standard AC outlet. It takes
about 10 hours to fully charge the batteries. (Charging time is
longer if you operate the recorder while charging the batteries.).

3. When the batteries are fully charged, unplug the adapter from the AC
outlet. Then, unplug the adapter from the he recorder.

Charging Nickel-Cadmium Batteries Using DC Power

Use a DC adapter, such as Cat. No. 270-1560, to charge nickel-cadmium
batteries using your vehicle's battery power.

CAUTIONS: Always plug the adapter into the recorder before plugging it
into the cigarette-lighter socket. Always unplug the adapter
from the cigarette-lighter socket before unplugging it from the
           recorder.

Your vehicle must have a 12 volt DC, negative ground electrical
           system.

1. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3V.

2. Insert the sub-mini plug into the adapter's socket. Line up TIP on
the plug with +POS on the socket.

3. Insert the sub-mini plug's other end into the recorder's DC 3V jack.

4. Insert the adapter's large plug into the vehicle's cigarette-lighter
socket. It takes about 10 hours to fully charge the batteries.
(Charging time is longer if your operate the recorder while charging
    the batteries.)

5. When the batteries are fully charged, unplug the adapter from the
cigarette-lighter socket. Then, unplug the adapter form the recorder.

CHECKING BATTERY POWER

If the REC/BATT indicator does not light or lights dimly when you press
RECORD, it is time to replace or recharge the batteries.

CAUTION: Press RECORD only when a cassette tape is loaded. Do not force
          down RECORD.

USING AC POWER

You can use an AC adapter, such as Cat. No. 273-1435A, to power the
recorder with standard AC power.

CAUTION: The recommended adapter supplies 3 volts with the center tip set
to positive, delivers the 145 milliamps the recorder draws, and
has a plug that correctly fits the recorder's DC 3V jack. Using
an adapter that does not meet these specifications could
seriously damage the recorder or the adapter.

Follow these steps to power the recorder with AC power.

WARNING: Remove alkaline or other non-chargeable batteries from the
recorder before you connect the adapter to the recorder.
Otherwise, the batteries might overhead and rupture or explode.

1. Insert the adapter's sub-mini plug into the recorder's DC 3V jack.

2. Insert the adapter's other plug into a standard AC outlet.

USING DC POWER

Using a DC adapter, such as Cat. No. 270-1560, you can power the recorder
with your vehicle's battery.

into the cigarette-lighter socket before unplugging it from the
           recorder.

Your vehicle must have a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical
           system.

Follow these steps to power the recorder with DC power.
