Home Alarm System (275-0484) Installation Faxback Doc. # 6822

LOCATING BELL BOX

A. Determine location outside of home or apartment to mount control box.
The area you choose should be accessible so that you can turn key lock
on and off manually. The most desirable location is approximately
one foot away from either side of main entrance door and 6 1/2 feet
    high.

B. Open control box and you will see four pre-drilled holes at the back
of box. (Make sure these are the holes closest to the corners of
cabinet). With box open, hold up against wall at chosen location and
    mark four mounting holes.

PREPARATION OF CONTROL CABINET:

Open control box and remove the knockout next to key lock, for future
feeding of wire through the wall. The knockouts are the precut holes at
each corner of the cabinet.

To remove the knockout-Take a screwdriver and hammer and punch out from
the rear of the box. Line up your box on the wall at the marked location
and mark the knockout area. You are now ready to drill all holes in the
wall. If you are drilling through brick or block, you must use a
masonry bit and use anchors supplied. Otherwise, you can use a regular
steel bit and you don't need anchors. Drill the four (4) 1/4" holes for
mounting and the one (1) 1/2" hole for knockout location. The 1/2" hole
must be drilled through the entire wall into the house.

NOTE: Extreme care should be used to determine if any utilities, etc.
are behind wall at that location.

BELL BOX MOUNTING:

A. Insert the four (4) plastic anchors (if necessary) into the four (4)
1/4" holes and mount the box up against the wall using the four (4)
#10 x 3/4" screws provided with your system.

B. Take the loose wire coil and go inside your premises. Feed enough
wire through 1/2" hole back outside to control cabinet to reach
    designated circuit wires in cabinet.

C. Go outside to box and splice twisted wire which you have just fed
through the hole to the twisted white wire tagged "Burglary".

NOTE: Taping is permissible, but soldering is preferred for absolute
       secure connections. Tape after soldering.

D. Place a 12V Battery-Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-007 (Eveready 732 or
equivalent) in bottom of control cabinet. Attach red lead (with
terminal) to positive (+) post of battery. Attach black lead with
terminal to negative (-) post of battery. NOTE: Check batteries
every six (6) months and change at least once a year.

INITIAL CIRCUIT TEST

TEST CIRCUIT AS FOLLOWS:

A. Go inside premises and take end of large coil of wire, strip the ends
and twist the bare wires together. Go outside and close control box
securely by putting in one of mounting screws supplied. NOTE: It is
very important that you secure box with one of the mounting screws
because if the door is not secure, the tamper switch on the inside of
the box is open and would cause a false alarm.

B. Insert key into lock and turn to right ("ON" position). Bell should
not sound. With lock in same position remove screw and open cabinet
door. Bell should sound since you have now released the tamper
switch. Close door and bell should continue sounding. Turn key lock
to left ("OFF" Position) and remove key. Secure lid of door with
screw. You have just experienced what will happen if someone
illegally attempts to enter your premises through any protected
opening. Even though they immediately close the door, windows, etc,-
your alarm will continue to sound until you turn it off with your
    special alarm key.

YOU ARE NOW READY TO PROCEED WITH WIRING OF YOUR PREMISES.

SYSTEM WIRING:

Positioning of Contacts:

Main Entry door-Locate magnetic contacts on edge of door opposite of
hinges (see diagram). Mount contact with terminals (switch) on door
frame with terminals facing upward. Mount magnet (without terminals)
on door directly below and as close as possible (no more than 1/4"
apart.) Bring wire up to two terminals at top of contact. Cut either
one of the two (2) wires.

NOTE: It does not matter which of the two (2) circuit wires you choose to
cut at any opening. You now have two (2) uncovered ends of copper
wire. Connect these wires to the two (2) terminals of the contact.

YOUR FRONT DOOR IS NOW PROTECTED

TEST: Before going any further, test as follows: First, twist the two
(2) ends of wire at the end of the coil together to complete the circuit
for testing. Make sure control box door is still screwed shut. Go
outside and close front door securely. Turn control box key to right
("ON" position). Alarm should not sound. Open front door and alarm
should sound. Close front door and alarm should continue to sound.
Turn unit to left ("OFF" position) and proceed to wiring next opening.

NOTE: With regard to wiring your premises, place wire nails between the
wire and space them approximately one foot.

FOLLOW THESE TEST PROCEDURES AT THE COMPLETION OF EACH OPENING.

You are now ready to protect your next opening by running circuit in such
a pattern that it completely encircles the house, Refer to the following
example depending on which type of windows, doors, etc, you are
protecting. Conceal wiring by running along frame work, behind drapes,
along baseboard, etc.

Up to this point, you have been splicing into only one of the two (2)
wires. At the last opening attach both wires to the contact terminals.

NOTE: If window design prohibits drilling for contact mounting, any
permanent bond adhesive may be substituted providing frame is
cleaned thoroughly with a cleaning solution.

INSTALLING ON/OFF TOGGLE SWITCH:

Your Toggle Switch is used for turning system "ON" and "OFF" within
premises. It should be located inside the home just opposite control
box and no more than six (6) feet of wire should be used between toggle
switch and control box.

SUGGESTION: Mount Toggle Switch over 1/2" hole drilled through wall-if
this makes for a convenient location. To connect, splice a piece of the
wire coil and connect this to the black leads in cabinet (marked "Inside
Toggle Switch") and run through the 1/2" hole to the black wire extending
from the toggle switch. Switch should be in "OFF" position while
installing.

To Test: Close all protected opening throughout house. Flip switch
to "ON" position and open any already protected door. Alarm should sound.
Flip Toggle Switch back to "OFF" position and alarm will stop sounding.

INSTALLATION OF EMERGENCY PANIC SWITCH

Some people prefer tp use more than one Emergency Switch. For Example:
Bedroom area, Main Front Door, etc. We suggest that one should definitely
be in the Bedroom area. The emergency switch is wired into the system
as any ordinary contact (i.e. magnetic contact). Locate in Bedroom area
up and out of the way so unauthorized persons cannot reach same.

Your local Radio Shack store has many additional security accessories
and items that will aid you in setting up a complete system. Talk with
your salesperson about your needs.
