RECORDING THE OUTGOING ANNOUNCEMENT

Before you set the TAD to answer calls, record the announcement that the
callers hear when the TAD answers their calls. We recommend you write
down your announcement before you record it.

If you plan to record messages, ask for the caller's name, phone number,
and message.

If you record an announcement you will not use for announce-only, the
announcement should tell callers they cannot leave a message.

Warning: Do not tell callers you are not home. Instead, say that you
cannot come to the phone at this time.

To record the outgoing announcement, follow these steps.

1. If the TAD is not in the stop mode, press STOP. Then press and hold
down ANNOUNCE PLAY/RECORD at the right of the TAD.

2. When the ANSWER indicator flashes rapidly, release ANNOUNCE
    PLAY/RECORD.

The outgoing announcement tape rewinds to the beginning if it is not
already there. Then a long beep sounds, the ANSWER indicator stops
flashing and lights steadily, and recording begins.

3. Speak in a strong voice within 6 inches of the microphone, located
on the front of the TAD.

The supplied outgoing announcement tape can record an announcement up
to 30 seconds long. The TAD automatically sets the recording level.

Note: If you use music as part of your outgoing announcement and have a
problem recording the announcement, record it without the music.

4. Press STOP when you finish recording.

A beep sounds and the TAD prepares the outgoing announcement tape for
playback.

Note: If the TAD reaches the end of the tape during recording, the tape
stops, 8 beeps sound, the tape rewinds to the beginning, and the
TAD enters the stop mode. The ANSWER indicator continually
flashes three times to indicate an error. Press STOP to turn off
the ANSWER indicator, and re-record the outgoing announcement.

CHECKING THE OUTGOING ANNOUNCEMENT

To check the outgoing announcement, be sure the TAD is in the stop mode.
Then press ANNOUNCE PLAY/RECORD. The TAD plays the announcement. Adjust
VOLUME as needed.

When the announcement ends, the tape stops and then rewinds and the TAD
stops.

Note: If there is a pause of 2 seconds or more in the outgoing
announcement, the TAD recognizes it as the end of the
announcement and stops at the pause when playing back
       the announcement.

SETTING THE TAD TO ANSWER CALLS

After you record your outgoing announcement, set the TAD to answer calls.
You can set the TAD to answer calls and record messages or play the
outgoing announcement without recording messages.

Announce and Record

You must install both cassettes before the TAD can answer and record
calls.

To set the TAD to answer calls, press ANSWER when the TAD is stopped.

The ANSWER indicator flashes rapidly while the outgoing announcement tape
rewinds to the beginning. When the tape stops, the ANSWER indicator
lights steadily and the TAD sounds a long beep to indicate the TAD is
ready to answer calls.

Note: If you remove the incoming message cassette when the TAD is in the
answer-and-record mode, the TAD sounds two short beeps and enters
       the announce-only mode.

To exit the answer-and-record mode, press STOP. The ANSWER indicator
turns off.

ANSWERING CALLS

When a call comes in (and both cassette are installed), the TAD answers
on the second ring if there are new messages. If there are no new
messages, the TAD answers on the fourth ring.

After the TAD answers the call, the outgoing announcement plays. At the
end of the announcement, a beep sounds. The TAD begins recording the
caller's message. The message can be up to 60 seconds long.

At the end of the 60-seconds period, the TAD sounds a beep, stops
recording, and resets to answer the next call. The beep is recorded
on the incoming message tape.

If the caller hangs up before 60 seconds have passed or if there is a 7-
seconds period of silence or steady or repeated tone during recording,
the TAD resets for the next call.

If only the outgoing announcement cassette is installed when a call comes
in, the TAD answers on the second ring, plays the outgoing announcement,
sound a beep, and resets to answer the next call.

The MESSAGE indicator shows you how many new messages you received by the
number of times the indicator flashes. For example, if you receive two
new messages, the indicator flashes twice, pauses, flashes twice again,
and so on. If you receive six or more new messages, the indicator
flashes continuously.

If the incoming message tape reaches the end during recording, the TAD
stops the TAD stops the tape, sounds eight beeps, and hangs up. The
ANSWER indicator flashes rapidly. The next time the TAD answers, it
sounds eight beeps and waits 7 seconds for your security code.

PLAYING MESSAGES

The TAD separates incoming messages into two groups: new and old.

The new message group consists of messages you have not heard.

The old message group consists of messages you have already heard. When
you play back all your new messages and reset the TAD to answer calls,
all messages become part of the old message group.

To stop the tape any time during playback, press STOP. To listen to the
remaining new messages, press PLAY/FAST-F again.

After all new messages play, three beeps sound, the TAD stops, and the
MESSAGE indicator turns off. These messages become part of the old
message group.

playback to find the desired message. Then release the button to resume
normal playback.

Playing Old Messages

To replay messages you have already heard, press STOP to exit the answer
mode. Then press REWIND to rewind to the beginning of the tape and press
PLAY/FAST-F.

Note: If the TAD sounds three beeps after the tape rewinds, the tape
is at the beginning if the new messages. Press REWIND again to
rewind the tape to the beginning.

To review or cue a certain section of the tape, press and hold REWIND or
PLAY/FAST-F during playback to find the desired section. Then release
the button to resume normal playback.

Note: If the TAD is without AC power for more than 12 hours, or if you
remove the incoming message cassette, the TAD loses all message
grouping information and all messages becomes part of the old
       message Group.

messages remain part of the new message group.

SCREENING CALLS

When a caller leaves a message on the TAD, you can hear the message
through the TAD's speaker. If you want to speak to the caller, pick
up the phone and talk. The TAD automatically resets to answer the next
call.

If you do not want to speak to the caller, let the TAD continue to record
the caller's message.

USING AN EXTENSION PHONE

You can answer an incoming call from any extension phone that is
connected to the same phone line as the TAD. If you pick up the
extension phone while the TAD is answering, the TAD automatically stops
and resets to answer the next call.

MEMORY BACK UP

The TAD backs up the current answer mode, the message counter, message
grouping information, and the security code for up to 12 hours during a
power failure or while the power adapter is unplugged.

When power is restored to the TAD, the following occurs:

If the TAD has been without power for more than 12 hours, it loses the
message grouping information and the security code resets to the default
setting (111). The TAD enters the stop mode.

If the TAD has been without power for less than 12 hours, it retains all
message grouping information and the security code remains the same as
before the power failure.

If the TAD was in the answer mode before the power failure, the outgoing
announcement tape rewinds to the beginning. The TAD re-enters the answer
mode. The ANSWER indicator turns on. The MESSAGE indicator flashes if
there are any unplayed messages on the incoming message tape, and the
incoming message tape winds to the end of the last new message.
