This section steps you through the software initialization of the hard drive. 
If you need instructions on the hardware see the "MOUNTING" section.

Use the following instructions to initialize the 25-1046 SmartDrive if the 
AUTO-INSTALL program is intact on the SmartDrive. If the AUTO-INSTALL is NOT 
intact on the SmartDrive, use the ALTERNATE install procedure (FDISK).

INITIALIZING THE HARD DRIVE

AUTO INSTALL PROGRAM:

Before you begin using the Auto Install program, you need your MS-DOS system 
diskette (the original 3.30 supplied with your computer) and a blank diskette.

With MS-DOS 3.30 in drive A and at an A prompt type: SETUPTL2 or SETUPTL3 
(depending on which computer you are using) and press <ENTER>.

Once at the SETUP screen, use the arrow keys to highlight DISK and MS-DOS as 
shown:

PRIMARY START-UP PROGRAM     DISK
INITIAL START-UP DEVICE      MS-DOS

Save this SETUP information with the appropriate key as instructed at the 
bottom of the SETUP screen.

RE-BOOT the computer with the DOS disk in drive A.

At the A prompt type:  C:INSTALL <ENTER>

    You will need a blank diskette to continue this program. This program is 
    going to install your hard disk for you. Most of the operations are 
    automatic; however, the install program will beep if it needs you to do 
    something.

      COMMAND.COM
     and Hidden DOS System Files

    Now INSTALL is going to make a bootable backup diskette for you to use 
    if you ever need to re-install your hard disk. Label a floppy diskette
    as INSTALL BACKUP and place it into floppy drive A.

    The entire disk will be erased, so make sure that there is no data that a
    brand new unformatted diskette if you like. Make sure that there is not a
    write protect tab on the diskette.

    ALL information on the diskette will be erased.

    Installation of your hard drive is complete!
    Remove the backup diskette. Store your installation backup diskette(s)
    in a safe place. If you ever need to re-install your hard drive, boot 
    your system from the diskette labeled INSTALL BACKUP.

At and A: prompt with MS-DOS in drive A:\> type: SETUPTL2 or SETUPTL3
(depending on which computer you are using) and press <ENTER>.

Follow the SETUP screen instructions to change your system start-up device 
back to: ROM

Save this SETUP information with the appropriate key as instructed at the 
bottom of the SETUP screen.

Remove your DOS disk and RE-BOOT your computer.

If you ever need to re-initialize the SmartDrive, use the back-up diskette
you just created to start your system. The re-installation process starts 
automatically, but you receive messages before any data is altered on your 
SmartDrive.

You are now ready to install the DOS files and whatever else you want on 
your new SmartDrive.



SPECIAL NOTE:  

If Auto Install does not operate properly or runs for an excessively long 
time, first check for proper hardware installation.  If the hardware is
installed properly, you may use the Alternate Install Procedure (FDISK).
If you continue to encounter problems, or wish to use only the Auto Install
program, have the drive sent to a Tandy Service Center to be re-factorized,
which also re-copies the Auto Install program back to the hard drive.
