DESCRIPTION
PS/2 SERVER AND OPTION CHARACTERISTICS
The PS/2 Server 85 433 (9585-0KG and -0KT) and the PS/2 Server 85 466
(9585-0NG and -0NT) models feature new high-performance, processors
and new disk subsystem integrated into an improved PS/2 Server 85
platform. The new IBM PS/2 Server 85 is offered in four models based
on two powerful Intel microprocessors and different hard disk storage
configurations.
Powerful processor complexes, with processor chip upgrade
capability:
       PS/2 Server 85 433
o i80486DX-33 microprocessor with 8KB internal cache
o 128KB L2 (write back) cache
o Upgradeable to i80486DX2-66 Processor or Intel Pentium OverDrive
    (1) Processor
       PS/2 Server 85 466
o i80486DX2-66 microprocessor with 8KB internal cache
o 256KB L2 (write back) cache
o Upgradeable to Intel Pentium OverDrive Processor
Both models feature support for 256MB memory with ECC-P
technology, 40MB/sec streaming data, and SurePath BIOS, upgradeable
via "flash" EPROM.
High performance, SCSI-2 Controller -- the new IBM SCSI-2
Fast/Wide busmaster controller that is integrated on the system
board, linked to a high-speed SCSI hard disk of either 540MB
(9585-0KG and -0KT) or 1GB (9585-0NG and -0NT).
Enhanced security -- the Server 85 433 and 466 with LogicLock
and new tamper-evident, locking covers, Privileged Access Password,
selectable drive startup and support for optional features (such as,
the new Cable Cover 4 and the Enhanced 2.88MB 3.5-inch Diskette Drive
with electronic eject) provide system security exceeding C2 enabling
requirements.
USER PRODUCTIVITY
The powerful i80486 microprocessors and the ability to upgrade to the
new Intel Pentium OverDrive Processor technology provide the CPU
performance required for today's and future operating system and
application environments. These processors, combined with the 32-bit
Micro Channel architecture, L2 Cache, IBM SCSI-2 Fast/Wide and
high-speed SCSI-2 Fast hard disks, efficiently support large numbers
of client read/write file transactions over the LAN and maintain
outstanding responsiveness.
The Server 85 433 and 466 are designed for improved system
reliability, increasing customer productivity and satisfaction
through reduced down time. IBM's confidence in the reliability of
these servers is reflected by a three-year, 24-hour, on-site warranty
-- with an average response time of four hours.
o The second level write back memory cache is integrated on the
    system board.
o Improved RAS features, such as ECC-P technology, Micro Channel
bus parity checking, and increased power-on hour design points
all translate into greater server availability and less down time
for the end user. A three-year, on-site warranty reflects IBM's
confidence in the reliability of these servers.
SECURITY
The Server 85 433 and 466 models provide significant hardware
security enhancements. These enhancements which exceed the
Department of Defense (DoD) Level C2 enabling requirements, include
new tamper-evident covers and system boot control capability. With
this tamper-evident system packaging, unauthorized intrusion to the
system hardware is recognized causing the system to Logic Lock, thus
leaving the system inoperable until reset with a separate Privileged
Access Password. Even removal of all power, including the battery,
does not invalidate or eliminate the Privileged Access Password.
Boot Control allows specification of both the sequence of boot
devices and the elimination of boot devices, such as the diskette
drive. Thereby, insuring that operating system security is not
by-passed.
The Server 85 models have security and system management
functions such as remote power-on, VPD and C2 security enablement,
designed as standard features.
o Confidential business data is protected by new LogicLock C2
    security features.
o The system unit covers are secured by a hardware lock with unique
key, backed up with tamper-evident switches. When enabled, this
feature causes the server to suspend operations if tampering is
detected while powered on. Even if the server is powered-off,
when the server is next powered on again, it will indicate that
an unauthorized attempt was made to enter the server.
o A Privileged Access Password, in addition to the standard power
on password, can be activated to further control access to the
server. If this feature is breached, it is virtually impossible
for the system to be used until the correct Privileged Access
    Password is given.
o Additional security can be obtained by installing the Enhanced
2.88MB 3.5-inch Diskette Drive with electronic eject and the new
Cable Cover 4 security cover. These optional features protect
data from unauthorized removal via the diskette drive or through
the cables attached to the back of the server. The Server 85 433
and 466 (560) models provide a remote power-on feature that
allows the server to be powered-on remotely via an external
modem, or from an internal timer. Remote power-off can be
achieved through software control and is beneficial for running
reports or printouts remotely, during off-shift periods.
o The Server 85 433 and 466 models have an unattended start mode to
automatically restart the server after a power failure and resume
    normal operation, without operator intervention.
o Vital Product Data (VPD) logs the system serial number. A system
administrator can view from the LAN the PS/2 Server 85 models
that reside on the network, including configuration. This
function can also serve as a security measure by confirming if
unauthorized servers are connected to the network.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT
Server 85 433 and 466 models feature eight adapter slots and seven
DASD bays. Seven slots are available for growth, such as by adding
IBM 32-bit, streaming data busmaster Token-Ring or Ethernet adapter
cards to support more LAN users. Four hard disk bays are available
to handle storage requirements of up to 9.0GB on the Server 85
(9585-0KT and -0NT). Six additional memory SIMM sockets are
available to handle applications, or to be used for a disk cache to
heighten performance.
o A 2.88MB diskette drive is provided in all of the Server 85 433
    and 466 models. The 9585-0KG and -0NG offers a 540MB hard disk
and the 9585-0KT and -0NT offer a 1.0GB hard disk. Additional
hard disk expansion is achievable by installing in the four
remaining bays, four additional options: IBM Personal System/2
540MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drive, IBM Personal System/2 1GB Hard Drive
or IBM Personal System/2 2GB Hard Drive.
o The Server 85 433 and 466 models contain 8MB of 70ns parity
memory installed in two of the eight SIMM sockets located on the
system board. System memory can be optionally expanded up to
256MB using 32MB Parity SIMMS when they become available.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
The PS/2 Server 85 433 and 466 models feature a unique system board
containing the microprocessor, the memory controller, L2 cache, and
the electronic modules. The Servers support 40MB/sec streaming data,
system control block (SCB) architecture, vital product data (VPD),
and error logging functions. The microprocessor chip on the
(9585-0KG, -0KT) may be upgraded to a i80486DX2-66 Processor or a
Intel Pentium OverDrive Processor. The microprocessor chip on the
(9585-0NG, -0NT) may be upgraded to the Intel Pentium OverDrive
Processor. Customer application software and system configurations
need not be changed when upgrading to the new processors.
Increases in system usage, performance demands of new
software, and increased numbers of users/transactions are some of the
reasons for upgrading a current system. Support for microprocessor
chip upgrades, and the ease with which the upgrade is made possible,
protects the customers investment by providing a low cost system
upgrade. Also, there is minimal disruption in system availability

due to migration of programs and data files.
       The Server 85 433 and 466 provide ease-of-performance upgrade
and software compatibility with all of the popular operating systems.
OPEN ENTERPRISE
Is designed to comply with International Standards Organization (ISO)

systems limitations.
The licensed System Programs includes set configuration and
features, copy an option diskette, test, backup/restore and update
System Program. These licensed system programs are stored in three
million bytes of protected partition on the hard disk drive. The
formatted capacity is therefore reduced by three million bytes and
the total user accessible capacity may vary slightly based on
operating environments. This partition is not affected when the
drive is formatted using the Format command provided in DOS or OS/2.
The licensed system programs are also preinstalled on the Server 85
system hard file with the reference data.
The following Micro Channel adapters and options are not
supported by the Server 85 433 and 466 models.
o IBM Personal System/2 Display Adapter 8514/A (#4054, 1887972)
o IBM Personal System/2 5.25-inch External Diskette Adapter/A
    (#8760, 6450245)
o The IBM Personal System/2 1MB Memory Module Kit-85ns (#5212,
    6450603)
o The IBM Personal System/2 2MB Memory Module Kit-85ns (#5213,
    6450604)
o The IBM Personal System/2 2MB Memory Module Kit-80ns (#5214,
    6450608)
o The IBM Personal System/2 4MB Memory Module Kit-80ns (#3933,
    87F9977)
o The IBM Personal System/2 8MB Memory Module Kit-80ns (#1401,
    6450129)
o IBM Personal System/2 5.25-inch 1.2MB Internal Diskette Drive
(#1006, 6451006) replaced by 6451066, which does not require an
    adapter card
o IBM Personal System/2 5.25-inch Diskette Adapter/A (#1007,
    6451007)
o IBM Personal System/2 4869-001 5.25-inch 360KB External Diskette
    Drive
o IBM Personal System/2 4869-002 5.25-inch 1.2MB External Diskette
    Drive
o IBM Personal System/2 256KB Level 2 Cache Option (#1098,
    6451095).
The following PS/2 options are not supported by the PS/2
Server 85 and installation of these options can adversely affect
system performance and reliability:
o IBM Personal System/2 2nd 1.44MB Diskette Drive (3.5-inch)
    (#1026, 6451026) -- supported replacement is #1072, 6451072
o IBM Personal System/2 CD-ROM Drive (#0845, 6450845) -- supported
    replacement is #1113, 6451113
o IBM Personal System/2 320MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drive (#1055,
    6451055) -- supported replacement is #1108, 6451234.
The following adapters cannot be installed in slot #8 of
the Server 85 433 and 466 systems because of the physical
    limitations of these adapters:
    - IBM Realtime Interface Co-processor Multiport/2 (#6263,
        09F1897 or #6247, 16F1820)
    - IBM Realtime Interface Co-processor Portmaster (R) Adapter/A
        (#6360, 53F2601; #6364, 53F2604; or #6368, 53F2607).
The DASD bay "E" (the third DASD bay from the top) is
restricted to 3.5 inch devices when any of the microprocessor chip
upgrade options are installed in any PS/2 Server 85 model.
Display adapter cards that use the Auxiliary Video Extension,
such as the IBM PS/2 Image Adapter/A-2, when installed in a PS/2
Server 85, require that a display be attached to the SVGA Video
Adapter during configuration of the system.
High-performance BIOS uses 128KB of system memory, and an
additional 256KB is reserved for system use in systems with 16MB or
more of memory.
