D&A Software is pleased to announce that WWW/LX is now available. WWW/LX is a World Wide Web browser. It consists of the browser program, a communications program, and a setup program. The browser program is HV version 2.0. HV stands for HTML Viewer. This program displays HTML documents and images inline. The program supports HTTP access, Hotlist, and Find, among many of its features. It will display pages found on the Palmtop, or request (from WWW.EXE) to obtain the document from a remote site. Help is available on-line by using the F1 key. The display of GIFs may be toggled. The program utilizes a cache to retain images and documents and save download time. WWW.EXE is the communication program providing the functionality of a TCP/IP stack and other tasks such as managing the serial port, the scripts etc.. This program supports SLIP and PPP protocols. It uses a script to dial and establish a connection to your Internet Service Provider (ISP). The configuration file for the WWW.EXE program is managed by WWWSETUP which is an easy to use configuration program. Each ISP has a setup describing specific information about it, and a script which manages the interaction between the Palmtop and the ISP. The configuration file contains several examples of working setups and scripts for many popular ISPs. Also some generic setups and scripts are included. WWW.EXE and HV constitute a powerful, compact Web browser. It works with about 200K on disk, and can run inside the System Manager. (Additional space is required for downloaded documents, images and indexes.) The architecture of the product is modular, i.e. HV and WWW.EXE communicate via an application program interface (API). Other applications that provide Internet services may use this interface as well. Examples: E-mail application and Newsgroups retrieval. D&A Software will provide these applications in short order. This architecture allows the Palmtop to manage a connection to the Internet in a lean and efficient manner. We appreciate your support during the wait for the product. D&A Software is committed to providing high quality solutions for the mobile professional. We would like to acknowledge the hard work and enthusiasm of the Beta Test Team, the best there is! HP and it employees have provided valuable support and guidance during the development and we are thankful to them. Last, but not least, the PAL Group which has developed PAL (Palmtop Application Library) contributed much to making WWW/LX "look and feel" like the System Manager application of the HP Palmtop.
D&A Software is proud to announce that Post/LX is now ready. Post/LX is the E-Mail and Newsgroups component which works with the communication engine from WWW/LX. Post/LX will be available only as part of the repackaged (and improved) WWW/LX, starting the first week of June 1997. Post/LX adds the long-awaited E-Mail and Newsgroups component to the suite of client programs now available for WWW/LX. Some of the features of Post/LX include: - Post/LX is made of three main components: Reader, which manages messages and lets you read and reply off-line, POST, which performs the sending and retrieval of E-Mail messages, and NEWS, which performs the sending and retrieval of newsgroups articles. Post/LX is a DOS application, and can run inside Systems Manager as well as outside System Manager. - A GUI interface that uses the PAL emulation of the HP System Manager "look and feel", is used in READER. The ability to work on E-Mail off-line, saves you connect charges, and gives you mobility and flexibility. - Folders to help you organize your messages and increase your productivity. Filters may be applied to E-Mail messages, to redirect them to appropriate folders. - Filters applied to newsgroups article can block unwanted articles from ever reaching your Palmtop. - Multiple E-Mail addresses may be checked to download E-Mail in one session. Similarly, multiple Newsgroups may be "visited" and scanned for new articles. You select the best connection, and Post/LX will retrieve your E-Mail from several mailboxes in one online "mail run". - E-Mail may be sent to Distribution Lists (mailing lists), by using a simple list that is easy to manage. You may have as many lists as you wish. - E-Mail has integrated MIME encoding and decoding so you can send and receive binary files transparently to/from Internet correspondents. - Particular attention was paid to the platform and its limitations, so downloading volumes from newsgroups can be strictly controlled by applying several criteria, such as filtering, maximum lines, maximum size, only the last few messages posted, scanning headers only to select articles to download, and so on. The product was built for the Palmtop (100LX/200LX/700LX) by three developers: (in alphabetical order) Andreas Garzotto (Post) Alexander ('lexu) Gutfeldt (News) Thomas Rundel (Reader) There are other auxiliary programs in the package to manage files, setup and so on. Our gratitude goes to two other groups who were part of this effort, and contributed in a very decisive way: - The Beta Testers who were completely unyielding and insisted on the best quality, the best features, the most flexibility. The product demonstrates their spirit and excellence in abundance. - The PAL group, headed by Gilles Kohl, which created a library of functionality emulating the graphical user interface (GUI), familiar to you from the HP System Manager. Without their contribution, this product would not be possible. Thank you. Avi Meshar D&A Software 28 May 1997
