Title : RED BARON - Details on Scoring Method (Text)

This file describes in detail the scoring method used in the Red Baron
flight sim. Two relatively unimportant pieces of data are still unknown.
Formatted for printing - five (5) pages. Now you can learn how you got that
magnificent/grossllly unfair score on that last mission.
    Written and uploaded by Jaybird.

                    RED BARON SCORING

I have managed to figure out some of the scoring for the
game. Here's a few of the things I have discovered while
flying various types of practice missions. The scores for
various types of kills and mission completion assume a
difficulty level of 100%. If flying at a lower level, just
multiply the scoes shown here by your difficulty level
expressed as a percentage of 100.

   1) The A/C you are flying has no (!) effect on the score.
Thus, you would, in theory, get the same score for
downing a Snipe while flying an Albatros D-II as you
would flying a Fokker D-VII. This just doesn't "feel"
right to me, but there it is.

   2) Taking damage has no effect on your score other than
the case where you cannot make it back to your base
and land there and are forced to forego that bonus.
As a matter of fact, being wounded also has no effect
on your mission score. Getting killed does - it costs
       you about 70 points.

   3) BOUNUSES FOR COMPLETING A MISSION ARE AS FOLLOWS:
         MISSION TYPE BONUS
         Patrol 0
         Dogfight/Scramble/Zeppelin Hunt 100
         Balloon Bust 100
         Escort Recce 50 (Note 1, p. 3)
         Escort/Stop Bombers 100 (Note 2, p. 3)
         Balloon Defense 100 (Note 3, p. 3)

   4) The A/C you are flying against and the quality of pilot
do affect your score as shown in the table below.

          A/C Pilot Skill Level
        Category Novice Regular Veteran
         Recce 15.0 30.0 45.0
           1 22.5 37.5 52.5
           2 30.0 45.0 60.0
           3 37.5 52.5 67.5
           4 45.0 60.0 75.0
           5 60.0 75.0 90.0
        Balloon     <----------   75.0   ------------>
        Zeppelin    <----------  225.0   ------------>

NOTE: The scores shown above assume that you are flying
solo; if you are flying with wingmen, your score
per A/C you shoot varies according to whether or not
you are leading the flight. See tables concerning
this on page 4 for details.

The Categories of A/C are as follows:
Category 1 - Moraine Bullet, Airco DH-2, and Nieuport 17.
                     Fokker Eindekker and Albatros D-II.
Category 2 - Sopwith Pup and Triplane and SPAD VII.
                     Albatros D-III and Pfalz D-III.
Category 3 - Sopwith Camel, Se-5a, SPAD XIII, and Airco DH-4.
                     Albatros D-Va, Fokker Dr-I, and Junkers J-1.
        Category 4 - Sopwith Snipe.
                     Fokker D-VII.
        Category 5 - Handley-Page 0/400.
                     Gotha Go-IV Page 1 of 5

As an example, suppose that you have a dogfight mission and
you fight and shoot down three SPAD XIII's. You return to and
land at your base. The score you earned was 292 points. Let's
figure out how good those pilots were.

You got 100 points for completing the mission and 20 points
for landing at your base; therefore the victories alone were
worth 172 points. The SPAD XIII is a Cat. 3 A/C. The only
combination of regular and veteran pilots that will give you
172 points is two regulars and one veteran. Note that you
lost 0.5 point due to rounding - bummer. By the way, that
172 points could have also been earned by downing two
veteran pilots and one novice - some what less likely than
one veteran and two regular pilots.

Everyone knows that Aces are more valuable than other pilot
types. Some Aces are worth more than others. In the table
given below, the number which is shown is the number of points
the Ace is worth above that for a veteran pilot flying the
same A/C. To illustrate, consider the RFC Ace James McCudden
flying an Se-5a. A veteran pilot flying this A/C would be
worth 67.5 (67) points. McCudden's value is +150, so his point
value flying the Se-5a would be 67+150 = 217 points. Note
that all aces are worth either +90 or +150 and each of the
two sides has exactly three pilots in the top category.

Note 1: The bonus decreases if the Recce A/C you are
escorting are shot down whether by enemy A/C
or FLAK (over which you have no control).
The following table lists the pertinent cases:

              Number Escorted Number Lost Bonus
                     1 0 50
                     1 1 20
                     2 0 50
                     2 1 35
                     2 2 20

Note 2: The bonus for Escorting Bombers depends mostly
upon whether or not the bombers destroy the
target. As an example, you get 100 points if
they destroy the target and all bombers are lost
during the return to base. On the other hand, all
the bombers can survive, but if they fail to
destroy the target, your bonus drops to 35
points (again, a factor over which you have no
control). The bonuses are given in the table below.

               Escorted Lost Hit Target Bonus
               ________ ____ _________ _____

                  2 1 Yes 85
                  2 1 No ?? <---
                  2 2 Yes ?? <---
                  2 2 No 0

Note 3: The bonus for Balloon Defense depends upon how
many balloons survived the attack. The table
               below list the pertinent cases:

               # Balloons # Lost Bonus
                    2 0 100
                    2 1 35
                    2 2 0

       FLYING WITH WINGMEN.
First of all, DON'T. They steal kills, cost you points
when they die, won't come to your rescue when you need
them, and they crash into you. They probably make very
good drinking partners back in the Officer's Mess and
that's where you should leave them. Maybe I'm being
unfair to the wingmen. They will occasionally occupy the
bad guys and keep some of them off your back until you
can get around to killing 'em. In that respect, they
       can be of great benefit.

WHAT WING MEN CAN COST YOU

Points are lost both in kill scores and in the
Mission Completion Bonus score (makes sense). Here's
what it costs you for losing wingmen:

       A/C Wingman Skill Level
     Category Novice Regular Veteran
     ________ ______ _______ _______
        1 15.0 25.0 35.0
        2 20.0 30.0 40.0
        3 25.0 35.0 45.0
        4 30.0 40.0 50.0

If you are familiar with the kill scores then it's
fairly easy to see that the loss of a wingman will cost
you 2/3 of the points you would have earned for shooting
down an enemy A/C of the same category and pilot skill.
These points are lost ONLY if you are leading the flight.
If you are a wingman, losses of other flight members do
NOT affect your score; losses of escorted A/C do.

      Mission Completion Bonus Points Lost
        Dogfight 25.0
Scramble 25.0 NOTE: these points lost
Baloon Busting 00.0 are not per A/C lost.
Balloon Defense 00.0 It is assessed for
Patrol 00.0 losing one or more
Escort Recce 00.0 wingmen and is in
Escort Bombers 00.0 addition to the loss
Stop Bombers 00.0 for those wingmen.
        Zeppelin Hunt 00.0

       ADDENDUM
The easy way to figure out what you shot down (as
alluded to on page 2) is as follows. Each time you
get a kill during a mission, tap Q (for Quit). The
program will inform you that you are in the middle
of combat and can't quit BUT it will also display
your current score. That score less the previous
score is the value of your latest kill. Piece of
cake requiring only that you keep a running tally
somewhere (in your head or on paper).
