I've replaced the high-tech bios batteries but still get an error on boot Something along the lines of Check keyboard, mouse or key lock. It does not boot! I've tried changing the keyboard, mouse and trying the key in both positions. IS there a way of forcing the boot or are all my hopes lost? please help! Best regards, Droid_2000 Andrew at 1:48:2 Monday November 20 2000 I own a PC2086 which came packaged with Windows 2.03. The computer disks got hit by a virus which rendered the disks useless. I had to wipe them. Only recently have I discovered a website (http://www.abandonkeep.com/os/All.shtml) where I have been able to download a copy. Unfortunately I have not been able to get the mouse to work with Windows, like it used to. On closer inspection of the contents of this ZIP file and the PC user manual I noticed the ZIP file is missing a file off the Build disk, MOUSE2.DRV. I also suspect the file SETUP.INF off the Setup disk is different. Where can I get hold of these files, or (downloadable) copies of the disks? Could someone e-mail me with them if they have them? tony at 1:0:43 Monday November 20 2000 im getting a satelite dish from my friend for free and need a reciver. Obviously I haven't such a disk. What can I do? John Hayward at 20:0:18 Sunday October 29 2000 phew, its still raining here!! I was walking home tonight and I saw a badly smashed up Amstrad 1640 base unit left out for the garbage. I went and grabbed it to see if I can salvage any useful bits out of it. Big suprise! This machine seems to have an 8 bit IDE card in and old Westen Digital IDE 30Mb drive in!!! I thought this machine (and all XTs) had MFM and RLL drives in?? Theres a card with two 40 way ribbon cables, and the hard disk is mounted in a proper cage and looks like the original factory fitted unit. Just got to fit in another machine now and see if it works. The Amstrad was a real wreck and its quite likely the drive is bust. The machine looks like its been dropped 5 foot onto the floor as the front of the case was smashed in and its been left out in the rain. Anyone else seen an 8 bit IDE controllers?? John Hayward at 15:5:36 Sunday October 29 2000 anyone need any knobs for amstrad 9512pcw, or 1512, 1640, 2xxx and 3xxx systems and monitors?? I have some spare ones for £1 each. Can ship anywhere. Heiko Hahn in Bad Nauheim, Germany at 9:37:35 Sunday October 29 2000 Dear Mr. Lawson, no, I'm really working with Amstrad PC's and I'm not at all interested in getting information about biometric pens (whatever this may be). I have just found out solutions of two problems with the PPC 512 I posted some days ago, and I'd like to describe them because some other questions in this great page seem to mention similar difficulties: First, my PPC crashed while displaying "Please wait" at the startup. This was, in my case, caused by a wrong AC power supply that put out 12V, but only 800mA which seems to be too weak. I now use a 10V, 1,5A supply, and the PPC boots without crashing. Secondly, my PPC turned off the display while booting. The reason for this was a wrong DIP switch setting causing the PPC to send video data to an imaginary external monitor instead to the LCD display. Strangely, the DIP settings You list on this page do not work on my machine; they seem to be totally different. The only combination that made my machine work was "1 on, 2 on, 3 on, 4 on, 5 off, 6 on" which, according to Your table, should be totally senseless. Possibly different versions have been built? However, using the old settings was definitely the most effective screen saver I ever used. Best wishes! H. Hahn philip in cornwall at 17:22:7 Saturday October 28 2000 My daughter has a 9486 & I wiped the hard drive fdisked & formatted it but now it wont pick up the cd rom drive. how can i get the cd rom to work Heiko Hahn in Bad Nauheim, Germany at 11:26:34 Saturday October 28 2000 Dear Mr. Lawson, I've got a problem with a PPC 512 I bought recently: after turning the machine on, the display shows "Bitte warten" (seems to be a German BIOS) and some dots slowly appearing on the screen. After 5 seconds, the computer beeps and the display becomes blank; it seems to be completely turned off, because turning the contrast adjustor produces no effect. After this has happened, the PPC seems to boot correctly from the system disk in drive A and reacts like MS-DOS had been loaded (just pressing Enter causes nothing, typing "DIR" short disk operation, typing "ORG" long disk operation etc.), so the machine itself obviously works. The DIP switches are set correctly; I've tried several possible combinations without any result. Is there any way to prevent the system from turning the display off while booting? I would be very glad if You could help me. Yours sincerely H. Hahn Steve at 18:16:33 Friday October 27 2000 I have a PC 9486 SX 25 and have recently bought a 486 DX2 66 cpu. Marilyn Cornish in 63 Hollybrook Rd., Brockport, NY 14420 at 15:1:55 Friday October 27 2000 Can anyone give me the ink refill cartrige number for a Amstrad DMP 3000 printer? I have an Amstrad Integra, This machine was top of the range when it was bought but I acquired it cheaply from a friend. The machine ( as you are no doubt aware ) is fitted with a TV card, I have downloaded your software ( integra.zip thankyou very very much ) I installed the software correctly but when I run the win TV program I get audio ( well a hiss ) but only a black screen. The program has an auto search function , which doesn't seem to do much , but this is not working. By running the colour thingy I can get a fuzzy screen but this still wont tune and is ignored the next time I run the program. I have installed the card as a Microsoft standard tv adapter ( under the network adapters in device manager ) Because I cant seem to locate specific drivers in the software you gave me. Also when I go to open the MPEG program I t says can't open MPEG window. I have installed PC card in the past on other machines- could the background hiss be something to do with the fact that I have no audio patch cable at the back of the PC ? ( do I need one ?? ) . Also one more problem ( well two really ) The DataFlex PC comms office that came with the machine is not responding, but other modems that I put in the machine work fine ( could it just be kanackered or is this a common problem ) I would also like to find somewhere to buy a replacement floppy drive cos the one in my integra has packed up. This is a really great machine and it would be a shame not to use it to its full potential. Please mail me soon as I am going crazy trying to get this thing working. yours hopefully thanx again Adam ( please could you mail me both at this address and at davethehamster@hotmail.com ) p.s. Sid Frisby in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Wales. at 18:18:43 Saturday August 5 2000 What an I doing wrong? I am trying to get a PC2086 to work for a friend. The hard drive (c) had been formated and I am trying to put doss v6 onto "c". When I put a doss disk into the floppy drive and type "setup" it tells me to "cont/alt/del" after doing this it reboots and will not read the doss disc and hangs with the message "incorrect system disc". There is a system disc for this machine and it will boot from the floppy drive and then I can get to the C:\ prompt. Many thanks, Sid Frisby. Dave Maguire in Bolton at 18:31:36 Thursday June 15 2000 I've got a 386sx laptop, but the floppy drive has stopped reading although the power supply seems okay, (I think that the motor that makes the disk revolve is dead, for example when you switch on even if there's a disk in the drive it boots normally from the hard drive without a disc seek error or system disc message). I had a look, and it seemed to me to be a standard item, so I went out and bought another. The new one will simply not work! I noticed that the connections to the old floppy were upside down compared to the new one and by some mental process which now escapes me this lead me to think that the original problem could be due to a fault in the ribbon cable connector. So off I go and buy one of these. Now, weierdly (or possibly not...thats why I'm asking) neither floppy works with the new connector no matter what configuration I try (and just to prove to myself that there's no error in the cable I bought another one of them as well!). The only way to get the power to work to the old floppy is to use the old cable and since the damn thing doesn't read the disks this is not a whole lot of use. Obviously I have expended quite enough time money and energy on this, but if there's a quick (and cheap) fix I'd be grateful. It would be a pity not to be able to use the machine as apart from the time it takes to load I can run a version of MS Professional Office (no help files or other extras) perfectly adequately. Sorry to be quite so verbose, but if you can help etc. P.S. Amstrad answers: Well to remove an MS-DOS operating system you just need to unhide (use ATTRIB) the msdos.sys and io.sys files in the root of a drive and then rename/delete them. However you do need some sort of OS so I'd guess that what you really want to do is just upgrade the existing OS. If you have a set of MS-DOS v5 or V6 install disks just boot from them and follow instructions to install the later version. Once you have MS-DOS then insert the first disk from the Windows 3.1 set and use SETUP to start the install process. But the 464 was usually powered from the power supply within its monitor so there was no separate power supply. The only exception to this was if you were trying to use an MP1 which was a combined power supply and modulator to produce TV output but its quite tricky to get hold of one of those these days. The batteries were dead and I have changed them. The clock is running again but the boot stops and apparently is not recognising the hard disk. Can you tell me how can I fix this situation? Amstrad answers: Detection of the hard drive on that machine is not in any way related to the battery backed RAM so I guess that its "disappearance" is purely coincidental with the batteries running down and the problem is more likely something fundamental like loose cables, dodgy/dirty connectors or simply a hard drive that has reached its sell by date! Because the 5086 is just a 640K machine (8MHz 8086 processor) you cannot run Windows, only DOS software and while there were DOS versions of "Word" that predate Windows even those need a lot of resources that the 5086 is unlikely to be able to deliver. From Jonathan Blankley in Midlands, UK at 10:52:15 Tuesday October 21 97 I have an Amstrad ALT-386-SX portable with 4MB of RAM in it. I realise that the RAM slots are hardwired not to accept any more than 4MB of SIMMS, but, by using a Kingston or similar ISA memory board in the expansion socket, would that increase the RAM, or will the BIOS prevent this? Amstrad answers: Well the actual limitation is that the C&T gate array doesn't map higher address lines to the SIMM sockets so I'll stick my neck out and say that I'm 90% certain that you probably can get past 4MB in the ISA bus but I'd get the memory board on sale or return just in case I'm wrong! It's not a BIOS limitation (I don't think) and I have a feeling the BIOS would "see" memory above 4MB. Thanks Amstrad answers: I'll add an answer shortly Frederic Charre in Scotland at 14:10:1 Thursday March 16 2000 Hi, i have an amstard pc6486sx with a 105mb hard disk drive. DOS is installed on the hard drive, but I decided to install windows 95. As the drive is too small (for windows and other applications), I want to install a second hard drive. i installed the 2nd hard drive as 'slave', I declared it in the BIOS with all the parameters necessary( hard drive was declared as D:). I rebooted, at a DOS prompt, I typed D:, and I got the message 'invalid disk drive'. I did a fdisk, and to my surprise, the drive D: was listed, along with C; which is the pre installed disk drive. I tried to change the jumper settings, but as I expected, the problem is the same. I don't understand why I get this message. And if i listen to the second Hard disk, i can hear it 'working'. It's just not seen by the PC. Have you any suggestions as I'm really stuck.
